Tesla Loses EV Market Top Spot To China’s BYD Despite Record Q4 Sales Even though Elon Musk’s automaker Tesla hit 2023 targets by smashing a record 494,989 EV sales between October and December last year, Warren Buffet-backed Chinese firm BYD took spot in Q4 sales by over 30,000 more units. Tesla’s aggressive sales push largely negated the drop of the previous quarter caused by a production pause to upgrade assembly lines, but came amidst the likelihood some models will now lose tax credits under new US regulations over battery material sourcing and the recall of around 2 million models last month over safety concerns.
