The indigenous inhabitants of the Canary Islands were known as the Guanches, who arrived at the Canary Islands in the first millennium BC but they were largely wiped out by the Spanish conquest of the early 15th century. In this video, I’m going to focus on one ancient site in particular, known as the Caves of Valerón, also known as Valeron’s Monastery, a Pre-Hispanic rock-cut complex of honeycomb caves is found on the northwest face of the Mountain of the Galician on Gran Canaria. But what was it used for, and just how old is the complex? Watch this video to find out all about this little-known wonder of the ancient world.
