A client came into our shop this year with a Rolex Datejust from 1970. He said that the watch was very special to him, as it was a gift from his uncle. He wanted us to bring the watch back to life and record the actual watchmaking restoration, so we did. This is the story of his watch: I received the watch from my Uncle Gary a few months ago. As a child and young man, I always saw him with a Rolex, and I would tell him that I’d have one just like it someday. My Uncle Gary used to work security for Robert Bass, a billionaire from Fort Worth, TX, famously known for selling the Plaza Hotel to Donald Trump. Gary stopped wearing the watch in the late ‘80s when the crown stopped screwing in. He packed it away in some bubble wrap and placed it in his safe for the next 35 years or so. Through our conversations, I shared my lifelong interest in complex timepieces. Gary told me that he had something he would like to give me, knowing that I would take care of it and enjoy it for the rest of my life. A few
