His program this year begins with Beethoven’s Sonata No. 27 in E minor, a captivatingly moody and unconventional sonata in just two movements that many view as a transitional work between the composer’s middle and late periods. Kissin continutes with two of Chopin’s most masterfully lyrical pieces, the Nocturne in F-sharp minor and Fantasy in F minor; Brahms’s booming Ballades, inspired by poetry and myth; and the Piano Sonata No. 2 by a 22-year-old Prokofiev, a work of great emotional extremes that the composer dedicated to a recently deceased friend. Venue: Salle des Combins (Verbier, Switzerland) Broadcast date: Thursday, August 1, 2024
