In this clip, protester Akal Simba defies police to rally Kenyans against President William Ruto’s Western-leaning administration. Simba, whose name means ‘lion,’ invokes the spirit of liberation that inspired the Mau-Mau resistance against British colonialism in the 1950s. He quotes liberation hero Dedan Kimathi, who said he would rather ‘fight on his feet’ than ‘live on his knees.’ After days of protests and a brutal security response, President Ruto has in fact now withdrawn the tax-hike bill.
