In this rare recording from the early 1960s, German baritone Hermann Prey (1929-1998) performs “Erlkönig,“ penned in 1782 by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and set to music in 1815 by Franz Schubert. The Swiss pianist and pedagogue Karl Engel (1923-2006) accompanies. I created this video from the cassette shown above, issued in 1974 on the Philips label, serial number 7314 010.
