A monument to the founder of the city and the first Tsaritsyn voivode appeared at the intersection of Port Said Street and Lenin Avenue, in the park near the Maxim Gorky Library on November 4, 2009. Officially, Grigory Zasekin is the founder of Tsaritsyn, Samara, Saratov and the first governor of these fortresses on the Volga. Prince Grigory Osipovich Zasekin is known for taking part in the Russian-Swedish war of 1570-1595, then serving in the fortress city of Korela. He also took part in the Livonian campaign: in the fall of the same year he was even appointed a junior commander in the conquered Trikaten. Then the voivode is sent to the Volga region, where he fully demonstrates his organizational skills by building and equipping three fortresses of Samara (for some time bearing the name Kuibyshev), Perevoloka (future Tsaritsyn, Stalingrad, Volgograd) and Saratov. In the eighteenth century, the fortresses lost their importance and became large industrial and commercial cities, which, however, did not forget their founder, voivode Grigory Osipovich Zasekin. Monuments to Grigory Zasekin have been erected in Volgograd, Samara and Saratov, and in Volgograd, in addition, a street is named in his honor. At the end of December 2008, in the House of Architects, the results of the city competition for the best sculptural composition that would perpetuate the memory of Voivode Zasekin were summed up. Contestants have submitted five applications. Three sculptural compositions were elected by secret ballot - each of them was numbered only, without attribution. As a result, the first two places were awarded to the works of one sculptor - Vladimir Seryakov. The third place went to the project of Sergei Shcherbakov. The sculpture was created for over a year. The winner of the competition, Vladimir Seryakov, said that the bronze Zasekin was cast in Zhukovsky near Moscow. Sergey Shcherbakov, who won the third place, helped to work out the details of the sculpture. As a result, in the Simbirtsev square, near the Gorky library, a figure of the mayor appeared, who sits on a war horse, and his gaze is fixed on the Volga, because of which nomadic enemies may appear. The total height of the sculptural composition together with the pedestal is more than six and a half meters, the weight is more than two and a half tons. The appearance of the monument to Grigory Zasekin on the territory of the central square of Volgograd caused serious objections from the prosecutor’s office and the regional committee for culture. The initiators of the project were blamed for the lack of the necessary approvals in such cases. However, by a court decision, the sculpture was not dismantled and remained in the same place.
