To understand this history, we need to go back to the end of World War II. In 1945, after almost six years of fighting, the Third Reich surrendered to the Allies. There was nothing left to fight for: the country had been invaded by its enemies, Berlin lay in ruins, and Hitler had taken his own life. It marked the beginning of a new era, but rebuilding the nation would be no easy task. After all, Germany had been ruled for twelve years by one of the most violent dictatorships in history.
