I think it was around 1995 when we had Chris Pontius interview the band Sonic Youth for Big Brother magazine. Well, it wasn’t the whole band, just Kim Gordon, and the interview was conducted over the phone, not in person. He was running down the list of silly questions, the majority of which Kim handled relatively well, all things considered, but then he came to this one (and possibly a paraphrased version at that): If you could wipe out any race on earth, which one would it be? A long awkward pause followed until she tersely responded, “Um, snakes,” and the interview ended shortly thereafter. We all got a tremendous giggle out of that—up until an hour or so later, that is, when someone went to transcribe the tape and discovered it had gone MIA, apparently lost in the clusterfuck of our POW office. Beyond our omnipresent state of incompetency, what I’m ultimately trying to get at is that if I was in Kim Gordon’s terminally hip shoes I would’ve replied, “Whip scorpions.” If you’re unfamiliar with this bastard arachnid then check out Johnny Knoxville as he explores this cave in Indonesia.
