Denon producer Yoshio Ozawa arranged various sessions in NYC in 1977, bringing some of the top jazzmen of that time to record some Japan-only releases. The one featured in this album sees Archie Shepp perform some Duke Ellington compositions in his unmistakable style, backed by a solid trio consisting of drummer Philly Joe Jones, bassist Earl May and pianist Walter Davis. In November of that same year, Ozawa will bring the DN-034R, one of the first PCM digital recorders, together with Denon engineers Kaoru Yamamoto and Takeaki Anazawa, and arranged the first series of digital recording sessions on U.S. soil, which featured, among the others, Archie Shepp once again.
