But what is Father's Day's history of date, and how widespread is it as a holiday? There have been several incidents credited as galvanizing the need to commemorate Father's Day. Following a mining catastrophe in 1907, Fathers were commemorated during a special church ceremony. On July 5, 1908 in West Virginia, an explosion in a mine killed over 360 men, many of them were fathers; the neighboring church commemorated the event with a fathers' day ceremony.
