He is currently playing with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL) Barabanov made his Kontinental Hockey League debut playing with SKA Saint Petersburg during the 2013–14 KHL season. Barabanov has played for the Russian national team in the World Junior Championships and World Championships. He was a member of the Olympic Athletes from Russia team at the 2018 Winter Olympics. On April 7, 2020 Barabanov signed a one-year entry level deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Fantasy Summary Strong and smooth-skating middle-six winger Observations April 2020 – After weeks of speculation, the Maple Leafs have signed KHL notable Alexander Barabanov to a one-year ELC. There were reportedly over 20 teams interested in gambling on the talented winger. Putting up 20 points in 42 KHL games in 2019-20 didn’t jump off the page, but the winger is hard working and skates well enough that his NHL transition is relatively low-risk. He isn’t an elite talent, but he does have good enough hands to finish off plays and contribute points. Expect a look in the bottom-six right out of camp, replacing a name like Denis Malgin. His spot on the roster won’t be guaranteed, but his low cap hit helps his case and he will come into camp stronger and with more professional experience than the Marlies currently on the cusp of breaking in. Don’t expect the same result as Ilya Mikheyev, who was producing at a higher rate before jumping over, but previous Russian free agent success certainly indicates the potential for immediate fantasy relevance here.
