In this chapter, we begin to discuss the similarities and differences between ancient Muay Thai aka Muay Boran vs modern Muay Thai. Ever since Muay Thai became an official sport in the early 1900s, there has been a great divide between Muay Boran versus Muay Thai practitioners. The rules of fighting has evolved to reflect the modern age: the use of gloves, having time limits, having different weight classes, many moves have been banned including rolling, breaking and lethal techniques. These changes made it difficult to impossible for Muay Boran fighters to compete in a combat sport that only allowed the use of punches, kicks, knees and elbows. At the same time, professional Muay Thai fighters became more athletic and well-versed in the sport of 8 limbs. Yet regardless of these differences, modern Muay Thai is the product of Muay Boran, which includes all the weapons of Muay Thai, as well as, many others that have been banned in sport competition yet was once relevant in ancient wars.
