This video demonstrates how to use a Software Defined Radio to decode HFDL signals on HF. HFDL is used by airlines as another method of ACARS communication. Decoding is possible using free software and an SDR that is capable of receiving the shortwave band. In this video, I was using an AirSpy HF Discovery as my software defined radio. I used SDR#, downloaded free from VB Cable is available from PC-HFDL can be downloaded at This PC-HFDL software is free, but times out after 5 minutes unless a licence is purchased. I was also using a NooElec Balun attached to my homemade HF dipole as seen at The NooElec v2 balun can be found at (US) (UK) Timecode : 00:00 - Introduction 00:35 - Map of received ground stations 01:15 - My HFDL receiving setup (inc HF dipole, NooElec balun, laptop & SDR) 01:57 - What you need for decoding ACARS on HF 03:00 -
