Porsche 917/30 CanAm Spyder Porsche is the only manufacturer to run turbocharged engines on the twisty street circuits of the 1972 CanAm series and wins the championship with the 917/10 Spyder. In 1973, Porsche goes one step further with the 917/30 Spyder. Its , twelve-cylinder engine with two turbochargers delivers up to 1,200 horsepower. The 917/30 sprints from standstill to 200 km/h in 5.4 seconds and travels at 300 km/h after eleven seconds. For improved handling, the wheelbase has grown compared to the 917/10 by 18 centimetres to 2.5 metres. Porsche wins all rounds and the championship in 1973. The first two races go to the 917/10, with the American race driver and engineer Mark Donohue clinching the following six races from pole position in the Penske Racing Team 917/30, turning the fastest race lap at every round.
