Migrants arriving via the Channel have been quietly granted the right to work in various sectors such as care, construction, and agriculture. This is part of a Home Office scheme that also allows them to maintain access to state-subsidised accommodation. Under Freedom of Information (FOI) laws, data reveals that nearly 16,000 asylum seekers, including those who crossed the Channel in small boats, have been permitted to work in a single year. They are engaged in occupations facing staff shortages, receiving 80% of the standard pay rate. To retain this allowance, migrants give up their £ weekly state subsistence allowance if their earnings surpass that amount. Additionally, they can discuss staying in asylum accommodation by contributing to the cost. Peter Cardwell speaks with home affairs editor at The Telegraph, Charles Hymas. #news #politics #uk #migrants #asylum #talktv #talkradio
