The French composer Benjamin Godard (1849-95) was actually a violinist (pupil of Vieuxtemps, no less), but was also an excellent composer for the piano, best-known for his several books of studies. Leaving aside the many pianist/organists I cannot think of any other composer who wrote such a substantial and accomplished body of music for a 'second instrument'.
