I played this song for ages for teaching purposes but lately I was liking the way it sounded on my OctaveMandolin and I hadn't heard a recording like that so I recorded a version and added some photos. I found a pile of traditional verses, compiled my favourites and changed the odd line here and there to fit better with my style. My wife Natalia helped with the harmonies. Hope you like it, lyrics below for reference. Oh Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie (traditional) Oh bury me not on the lone prairie These words came low and mournfully From the ashen lips of youth who lay On his dying bed at the close of day Oh bury me not on the lone prairie Where the coyotes howl and wind blows free In a narrow grave just six by three Oh bury me not on the lone prairie It matters not or so I've been told Where the body lies when the heart grows cold Yet please do grant this wish to me O bury me not on the lone prairie I wish to lie where a mother's prayer And a sister's tear will mingle there By my father's grave, there let me be O bury me not on the lone prairie “O bury me not...“ And his voice failed there But they took no heed of his dying prayer In a narrow grave, just six by three They buried him there on the lone prairie Now cowboys mourn as they roam the plain For they marked the spot where his bones were lain So cross thyself when you pass his grave Say a prayer to God for his soul to save Oh bury me not on the lone prairie Where the coyotes howl and wind blows free
