The Lonely Villa is a thriller film directed by David Wark Griffith: and written by Mack Sennett. It was produced by Biograph Company and released in 1909. In this film, Griffith makes masterful use of “intercutting“. This technique is intended to express the contemporaneity between two or more actions and consists in building a sequence by alternating the scenes that compose it according to the scheme: A1, B1, A2, B2… etc. In this film, Griffith alternates not two but three different scenes: the women barricaded in the house, the thieves who try to enter, the father who runs to rescue them. Griffith passes from one scene to the other, creating a fast-paced rhythm that drags the viewer into a progressive whirlwind of suspense.
