Something a little bit more exotic today... I did some first tries playing the oboe a couple of months ago and also started reed making. Due to frustration about dimensions and consistency within a series of reeds, I decided to use my home-made CNC router for reed making. First experiments, similar to a commercial profiling machine, with an already folded reed were not so successful due to a more or less undefined shape of the tied and folded cane. The cane is way more defined before it is folded, as it then has a well-known inner diameter from gouging (and a quite defined outer diameter from wood selection). Hence, I made a vacuum fixture from brass (because brass is easy to solder) to hold the unfolded cane during machining and a software to create the reed geometry and G code for the machine to process. Inquiries about the software can be addressed to reednc (at)
