The count of military personnel for the years spanning from 1900 to 2023. Military personnel are defined as troops under the command of the national government and are maintained in a state of readiness for combat. Troops in the reserves (unless mobilized for wartime service), colonial forces, irregular units such as civil defense groups, frontier guards, gendarmerie, and other quasi-military organizations are excluded from this assessment. These countries are categorized (colored) into three main groups, each of which currently holds a significant presence in the top 15 list: Muslim countries, Southeast Asian countries, and the remaining nations worldwide.
