Elgar's Enigma SOLVED

Beethoven's famous fugue subject beginning the String Quartet Op. 131 is the hidden counterpoint to Elgar's “Enigma“ theme. The final five notes were lengthened by Elgar to extend the melody in a standard tradition of church organ improvisation. The “hidden theme“ moves in correct contrary motion, even generating a 9-8 suspension properly prepared and resolved.
