Velasquez was born on July 28, 1982 in Salinas, California to Efrain and Isabel Velasquez. Efrain, who immigrated to the US illegally from Mexico and whose story inspires his son,[3] met and married American-born Isabel, which allowed him to attain US citizenship.[4] Velasquez has two siblings, Efrain, Jr., and Adela.
