Peter Nestler begins by paying homage to Danièle Huillet, to whom he was very close: they met in the early sixties, when the Straubs arrived in Germany. whom they considered the greatest living German filmmaker. Nestler’s voice has a gravity and a unique resonance: the slightest sentence pronounced off by this voice becomes an oracle, a truth immediately engraved in stone. Fortunately, Nestler takes care to compensate for this attribute with texts of great precision and sobriety. Miracle of his film: when he yields, towards the end, to three extracts from De la nuée à la resistance, the Straubs’ cinema has never seemed so powerful, obvious, elementary.
