Spider Queen of the Sonoran Desert - Aphonopelma chalcodes Tarantula

Throughout the southwestern United States and Northern Mexico roams a hairy beast that evolved over millions of years and honed their skills to become an apex predator of the desert. With large, thick fangs that inject a paralyzing venom into their prey, thousands of highly sensitive hairs all over their body, as well as defensive setae on their abdomen that they can kick up into the air that act as harpoons. This terrifying night stalker of the desert would be more accurately described as the Gentle Giant Spider of the Arizona Desert. Join me as we examine the Aphonopelma chalcodes and the Sonoran Desert it inhabits. We will follow this spider from an egg to a full grown adult and discuss everything from their environment, growth rate, hunting, digestion, predators, and more!
