More than 180,000 US soldiers were deployed on the southern coast of the island. Although Japanese resistance was initially sparse, the ensuing battle for the island would last 82 days, killing an estimated 12,000 American soldiers, more than 100,000 Japanese, and roughly 50,000 Okinawan civilians. The battle was the bloodiest of the Pacific campaign, and subsequently became nicknamed the Typhoon of Steel. On June 22 US forces seized control of the island as Japanese officers committed ritual suicide. The US would use the island from which to launch naval and air attacks on mainland Japan until the end of the war. Music and Scoring by MM Music Check out the music featured in this film here: .
