How whales help the climate | Whale and Dolphin Conservation

The average whale captures as much carbon dioxide as 30,000 trees. By saving whales, we can help tackle climate change. Whale poo is also full of nutrients and stimulates the growth of phytoplankton. It is estimated that phytoplankton produce at least half of the Earth’s oxygen. Each year, the bodies of dead whales take 145,000 tonnes of carbon to the ocean floor. The continued recovery of whale populations is a significant mitigation strategy to combat climate change.
