Steve Bronski, co-founder and keyboard player in 1980s pop group Bronski Beat, has died December 10, 2021, at the age of 61. Bronski, from Glasgow, was born Steve Forrest and formed the group in 1983 with singer Jimmy Somerville and fellow-musician Larry enjoyed UK top 10 hits with the gay anthem ’Smalltown Boy’, ’Why?’ and a cover of Donna Summer’s ’I Feel Love’. Somerville said: “Sad to hear Steve has died. He was a talented and a very melodic man.“The singer added: “Working with him on songs and the one song that changed our lives and touched so many other lives, was a fun and exciting time.“ Bronski Beat were a British synthpop trio which achieved success in the mid-1980s, particularly with the 1984 chart hit “Smalltown Boy“, from their debut album The Age of Consent. “Smalltown Boy“ was their only US Billboard Hot 100 single. All members of the band were openly gay and their songs reflected this, often containing political commentary on gay-related issues. The initial line-up, which recorded the majority of the band’s hits, consisted of Jimmy Somerville (vocals), Steve Bronski (born Steven William Forrest, keyboards, percussion) and Larry Steinbachek (keyboards, percussion). Somerville left Bronski Beat in 1985, and went on to have success as lead singer of the Communards and as a solo artist. He was replaced by vocalist John Foster, with whom the band continued to have hits in the UK and Europe through 1986. Foster left Bronski Beat after their second album, and the band used a series of vocalists before dissolving in 1995. This live video was first broadcast by TROS Formula one on 22 April 1985. ’I Feel Love’ was a hit written by Giorgio Moroder and Peter Bellotte for Donna Summer. In Bronski Beat’s version it reached no 3 in the UK charts and no . 11 in the Dutch Top 40. Watch our great music videos ❯ More TopPop?
