A landfill on the outskirts of Kampala (Uganda’s capital) contains tons of ‘Covid’ trash: used syringes, masks, gloves are brought in from local clinics. Medical organizations are supposed to dispose of the waste, but they often don’t have the money to do so. ‘They mix it together with the domestic waste, mainly food waste, and then it ends up in the mainstream waste,’ says Kabangi Moses Mwigo, commissioner of the Environmental Health Department. Such a deplorable situation occurs in many countries. According to the WHO, more than 200,000 tons of medical waste ended up in landfills around the world during the pandemic.
