The most active volcano Sakurajima has started erupting on the Japanese island of Kyushu. A column of smoke and ash rose to a height of up to 5 kilometres. The eruptions of this volcano occur with enviable regularity, and the largest of them in 1914 even changed the geography, connecting the then island with the mainland by an isthmus of frozen lava.
