Bubble Puppy had been formed back in 1966 and had toured extensively with Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Canned Heat, Janis Joplin, Grand Funk Railroad, and many others. But it wasn't until early 1969 that the US and other countries took major notice of the band and their new single, “Hot Smoke & Sassafras.“ 1969 marked the end of the psychedelic era as the older forms tied to folk rock began to fade out and blues rock, progressive rock, and heavy metal gradually replaced the sound. This was one of the last of the older style psychedelic rock to chart high on Billboard and Cash Box. It is also one of the wildest and most imaginative acid rock songs ever produced. You could hear this being played all over the neighborhoods by young people who owned stereos or hi-fis capable of reaching very high volumes.
