The city is located on the Ural River, near the confluence of the river Sakmara. Orenburg is considered a transcontinental city as most of it is considered in Europe, but part of its south side crosses the Ural mountains into Asia. The city was founded in 1743 and soon became a centre of trade with Kazakhstan and Middle Asia. With the coming of the Samara-Orenburg railway in 1877, the city began delivering fresh and frozen meat, melted butter, lard and wool to Moscow and Saint-Petersburg. The city became a large trade and distributing centre of cattle and meat brought from the Kazakh steppes. In 1905, the construction of the Orenburg-Tashkent Railway was completed.
