Typhoon Gaemi has made landfall on the Chinese mainland. More than 150,000 people in southeastern China's Fujian province have been relocated to safer areas as the storm approaches. It comes after massive flooding and landslides in Taiwan and the Philippines. China issued the highest level of disaster alert on Thursday evening local time as the storm approached its shores. Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting with top Communist Party leaders on flood control and disaster relief, state media reported. Train services have been suspended in Fujian province, and authorities in northern China have warned that heavy rain could trigger landslides and floods. China is experiencing a summer of highly variable weather, with heavy downpours in the east and south and scorching heat waves in the north. Heavy rains typically occur from mid-July to mid-August.
