The Russian Navy’s mission is multifaceted and varied – from defending the nation’s coastlines and assisting ground and air-based military operations, to deploying forces thousands of kilometers from Russia’s home shores, and maintaining the deadly ‘Boomer’ submarines which are part of Russia’s nuclear triad strategic deterrent. The Navy is divided into four major fleets: the Northern, Baltic, Black and Pacific, plus the Caspian Flotilla of small missile-launching ships, and a permanent Mediterranean Task Force.
