A pitched battle broke out between worshippers and the authorities after a network of illegal tunnels was discovered being used for nefarious purposes. Plot twist: this was in New York, and Jews were building the tunnels. The tunnels under the synagogue were discovered in December, and contractors had been called to fill the tunnels with cement. As a last gasp attempt to prevent this from happening, members of the synagogue instead filled the tunnels with themselves. This did not work, and ‘a number of individuals’ were arrested while accusing the police of ‘vandalism.’ Members of the synagogue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn had been digging the tunnels for unclear purposes. Some have reported that it was a way to illegally expand the synagogue… somehow. Others have suggested that it was to reach a now-abandoned set of underground baths. Whatever the purpose, it all appears to tie into a dispute between two groups of Jews who both claim ownership of the property.
