In 2008, the Georgian army invaded South Ossetia, prompting a Russian military response that led to vocal protests from Western states, although a ceasefire was quickly reached. Today, Georgia’s ruling party sees similarities with those events and recent attempts to involve Tbilisi in the Ukraine conflict.
