These women potters of the Volta in Ghana continue to hand-build and fire in traditional ways. They fire in a mound, with just a few pots or many dozens, using whatever combustibles are available. In this instance the women ran out of fuel and used the thatch from a dwelling on their compound. The fire lasts for about an hour. The temperature reached seemed quite low as the pots were just beginning to glow a dull red.
