However, this is not a new event. Political corruption knows no limits. We see it today and throughout history, but this channel does not deal with modern politics. Nineteenth century American and its political landscape alerted fellow legislatures that there needed to be laws to wrangle in politicians and their corruption. The Civil War opened people’s eyes about the corruptness of people who sought to profit off of war. Abraham Lincoln battled against war profiteers who mishandled the War Department and its contracts for weapons and other materials. The political corruption I want to emphasize is what happened within the Halls of Congress and the War Department during the American Civil War. That war altered the country forever, setting precedents that the United States still uses to conduct itself politically, socially, and economically. One of those instances of corruption ended in the destruction of a Senator’s political career and the establishment of laws to guide the conduct of future politicians.
