From working on car engines at the age of seven to music mentoring from famed Wrecking Crew session bassist Lyle Ritz-these experiences would seamlessly dovetail with the creative and aesthetic license Dick Sutphen later afforded to Storrs in his work for Valley of the Sun. An early interest in engineering led Storrs to L.A. City College where he studied optical electronic engineering. Deeply interested in music, he pushed past institutional roadblocks and eventually enrolled in an electronic music comp course on a P/F basis. Since he wasn’t be graded on his compositions, Storrs shot for the moon. A self-proclaimed psychoacoustic nut and true experimentalist, Storrs was fascinated with the texture of sound. This was useful for his approach to new age music. Storrs’ imaginative spark combined with his command of recording equipment and digital instruments were key to expanding the scope of the label’s creative output. In the end, Storrs’ drive to explore uncharted musical territory regardless of genre established a broader, more experimental foundation for VOTS moving forward-taking his new age sensibilities and techniques with him into the larger musical universe through his collaborations with hip-hop, pop, and disco artists.
