July 16 - International Day of the Serpent By: James Aparicio (Posted on Monday, July 28, 2014) MNHN - Unit of Zoology - Herpetology Section The July 16 has been established as the World Day of the snake , in an attempt to generate global public awareness for the conservation of these animals and their environment. Snakes are the second most diverse group of reptiles with over 3400 species and are present except for Antarctica on all continents. In our country variation in the number of species, we are present in all ecosystems, from the Amazonian forest to the Altiplano. In Bolivia they have been registered so far 175 species of snakes, of which only 26 species (14%) could be considered dangerous to humans, because they have the ability to inject venom, if someone is accidentally bite.
