Happy Hausa Day! Every 26 August, people around the world celebrate one of Africa’s largest ethnic groups — honoring their language, heritage, and traditions. Spoken by nearly 94 million people (as 1st and 2nd language), Hausa is the most widely spoken Chadic language and a cultural powerhouse across West Africa and beyond. From the historic Hausa Bakwai city-states that powered trans-Saharan trade, to the evolution of Hausa writing in ajami (Arabic script) and boko (Latin script), the language has carried history, knowledge, and identity across generations. Hausa has been standardized, taught in schools, and thrives today in books, newspapers, radio, TV, film, and theater. It is not only a language, but a vibrant cultural force — celebrated with music, Dambe (traditional boxing), cuisine, and crafts.
