Poland, Austria, Romania, Czech Republic are sinking. Storm Boris. 0:00 Poland Central and Eastern Europe is engulfed in terrible floods. Heavy rainfall was caused by Storm Boris. Rivers left their banks and rushed into cities in Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary. In Poland, the areas surrounding four rivers were in a catastrophic situation. In the southwest, the Biala River exceeded its level and fell on the nearby cities of Morow and Głucholazy. Also among the most damaged cities by the floods were Klodzko, Gliwice and Zebrzydowice. Almost everywhere the streets were flooded by strong streams of water. The water level in the lowlands reached 2 floors of buildings. More than 16 thousand residents had to evacuate or temporarily move. Cities were literally paralyzed and everyday life stopped. Flooding also affected other parts of Poland, in some places more severely, in others less. Even in Krakow, the second largest city, residents were offered sandbags to protect themselves from flooding. 6:00 the Czech Republic In the Czech Republic, the highest flood alert level was declared in 38 different places. The Oder River burst its banks and flooded nearby villages and the town of Jesenik. Parts of Northern Moravia were also hit by severe flooding. More than 260,000 households were cut off from electricity throughout the country. In some areas, the floods were so strong that they washed away everything in their path. Even in Prague, flood barriers were raised and some city activities were suspended. Rainfall in a couple of days amounted to more than 400 ml of precipitation. 8:00 Austria The Austrian province around Vienna has been declared a disaster area. The city of Salzburg has also suffered from heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers. Although the rivers were at a critical level, there were no such severe floods as in Poland or the Czech Republic. The main problems were traffic disruptions and the closure of some institutions. However, the situation may yet change for the worse. Rain is expected here for a couple more days, which could lead to dire consequences for residents. 9:30 Romania Flooding has also been terrible in Romania. More than 700 homes have been flooded in the southeastern region of Galati. Some vehicles have been trapped in floodwaters. In Europe, as in many other parts of the world, the likelihood of extreme rainfall is increasing due to climate change. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, which could lead to heavier rainfall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The channel lists such natural disasters as: 1) Geological emergencies: Earthquake, volcanic eruption, mudflow, landslide, landfall, avalanche; 2) Hydrological emergencies: Flood, Tsunami, Limnological catastrophe, floods, flooding; 3) Fires: Forest fire, Peat fire, Glass Fire, Wildfire; 4) Meteorological emergencies: Tornado, Cyclone, Blizzard, Hail, Drought, Hail, Hurricane, Storm, Thunderstorm, typhoon, Tempest, Lightning.
