Matching supple muscle with brainy brawn, fast-rising Edinburgh producer LWS comes bowling onto the PM series with a pair of widescreen heaters. As is now well established and expected for Peder Mannerfelt’s quick-fire offshoot of club-ready cuts, these pieces are forged outside obvious genre categorization, where it’s easier to talk in terms of sound and energy than style. ‘Pendrum’ is a long and ranging track which revels in knotty rhythmic intricacy, driven by a drum palette which sounds like it was sourced from those odd things you find in miscellaneous kitchen drawers. The space-age pads take these items and fling them towards the horizon, and we’re dutifully dragged along for the ride. It’s a true journey piece – a saga for the club loaded with dramatic peaks and troughs. ‘Now That’s Focus!’ similarly looks beyond obvious drum machines for its percussive hits, but this time it’s purely about the beat. LWS proves himself to be devilishly effective at setting a scene with not much more than a biscuit tin and a dripping tap at his disposal, strapping the crinkling of a crisp packet to a rugged kick and slowly letting the gas escape from his bottle of sparkling when the track shifts into a higher gear.
