The city was founded by Ivan the Terrible in 1578 on lands populated at the time by Mordvins. In 1781, Empress Catherine the Great granted Arzamas town status and a coat of arms based on the colours of the Arzamas regiment...... Celebrating the victory over the French, the city built the Cathedral of the Resurrection. During the Soviet period, the cathedral was ordered to be blown up. However, due to the strong indignation of the residents, the cathedral was just closed. In 1947, the cathedral was reopened and services began to take place again.,....
