China has completed the construction phase of the world's largest transparent spherical neutrino detector, located 700 meters underground in Kaiping, Guangdong Province. This 12-story acrylic sphere, measuring 35.4 meters in diameter, is a key component of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Guangdong government since 2015. The installation is expected to finish by the end of November, with the observatory set to commence full operations in August 2025. JUNO aims to enhance understanding of the neutrino mass hierarchy by observing neutrinos emitted from the nearby Yangjiang and Taishan nuclear power plants, achieving an unprecedented energy resolution of 3 percent. The observatory is not only poised to investigate neutrino mysteries but will also facilitate research on supernova, atmospheric, and solar neutrinos, with operations planned for at least 30 years. __________________ ShanghaiEye focuses on producing top-quality contents.
