Sonny Liston fights to get himself back into the World Heavyweight title picture in his first bout on US soil in nearly 3 years against former USA California State Heavyweight Champion, Bill McMurray. More info below... Sonny Liston had lost his World Heavyweight title in a controversial fight with Cassius Clay back in 1964, retiring on his stool after suffering an apparent shoulder injury. The following year Liston lost the rematch with Clay, now called Muhammad Ali, when he was stopped in the first round amid accusations of taking a dive. Liston took a 14 month hiatus from the ring but was offered the opportunity to headline a series of fights in Sweden during 1966 and 1967. Liston won all 4 of his encounters by KO against German heavyweight Champion Gerhard Zech, USA Ohio State Heavyweight Champion Amos Johnson and journeymen Dave Bailey and Elmer Rush.
