Des’ relationship to his instruments is fluid and highly intimate. As he manipulates the sound, he often steps back to dance. In these especially mesmerizing moments, Des inhabits the frequencies with his movement, surrendering to the improvisational loops he has created. Sonically, he falls into a rhythm of isolating particular sounds – say metallic sounding raindrops or the ambient whir of a large machine – then adds sparse yet emotive melodic lines and idiosyncratic flourishes (bleeps, bloops, swooshes) before stripping everything back to the elements. This particular recording from the 2019 Inasound Festival in Paris also offers a second performance of more cerebral, ambient work from the singular artist. Native Parisian Kirikoo Des studied dance before embarking on a career in music. A futurist at heart, his early influences in the avant-garde movement led him to incorporate many different forms of technology and digital art into his practice, which along with making music includes building instruments.
