Powerful Typhoon Khanun hit Okinawa in southwestern Japan on Wednesday. The wind speed is 170 km/h near the center of the typhoon, with gusts up to 230 km/h. The typhoon is moving west at a speed of 15 km/h. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning of strong winds and storm surges. Meanwhile, evacuation centers were set up in Okinawa. The storm damaged several houses and forced traffic to stop and shops to close. Many hospitals only accepted emergency patients. The hurricane also left almost 200,000 homes without power. Khanun, the sixth typhoon this year, has caused disruption to traffic. Public transport, including buses and ferries connecting the region's islands, has been suspended. Hundreds of domestic and international flights to and from Naha Airport have been cancelled. The rain clouds surrounding the typhoon develop and bring heavy rains. About 20 cm of rain fell in the Okinawa region by noon Thursday. A man was found dead in a village in northeast Okinawa after a garage collapsed on him. It is reported that 34 people were injured. Authorities urged residents to stay indoors and stay away from windows. The typhoon is expected to move west, maintaining its intensity, and approach the Sakishima Islands.
