Fresh from being dragged through the courts, shot at, and probably stepping on a Lego, Donald Trump cut a defiant figure as he addressed supporters at the Republican National Convention on Thursday. Accepting the party’s nomination to run in November’s US presidential election, Trump gave a 90-minute speech in which he called for unity, but didn’t pull his punches when discussing immigration, international relations or the Biden administration, which he said had done ‘unthinkable’ damage to the country. Addressing the increasing political divide in the country, of which he was very nearly a casualty, Trump urged Americans to unite. ‘We have to work on making America great again, not on beating people.’ Trump also vowed to ‘end every single international crisis that the current administration has created,’ with particular reference to Ukraine and Gaza. He also discussed the possible rekindling of relations with Pyongyang, adding that he ‘got along very well’ with Kim Jong Un, and joking that the North Korean leader ‘misses’ him. As expected, Trump also vowed to tackle the US’ illegal immigration problem, which has snowballed under Joe Biden. ‘It’s a massive invasion at our southern border that has spread misery, crime, poverty, disease and destruction to communities all across our land. Nobody’s ever seen anything like it,’ said the former president.
