He is a vinyl collector and dealer from Berlin, who travels a lot for work. A translator job took him to Kinshasa last December, where he was able to dredge up some 200 45s spanning 3 decades of recordings from the Congo basin. All records presented here are from the years after renaming the country to Zaïre in ’71. Mobutu’s state ideology “Autenticité” demanded that traditional values, names and music be adopted, which great a many abided by. Nonetheless, the democratization of the sixties and the concomitant influx of foreign influence, leading all the way to the international super concert accompanying ’74s « Rumble in the Jungle «, had a massive impact on local artists.
